Don’t discourage a bet if you’re planning to call

Filed under: pro tips, Mike Caro — Mike @ 2:53 am

Tips from Professional Poker Players It’s instinctive to try to keep an opponent from betting if you hope he doesn’t. A natural reaction is to reach toward your chips, trying to intimidate the player, hoping he’ll check and then see the showdown for free. This makes no sense if you’re planning to call. You want to encourage a bet, not discourage it. You might succeed in making a weak hand or bluff reconsider and not bet. But those are exactly the hands you want your opponent be bet, because those are the ones you can beat. Always encourage a bet if you intend to call it.
